‘Positive step’: New Collingwood housing group working to partner with longstanding non-profit
Jane Truemner and Laurel McCorriston, the duo behind the Collingwood Housing Initiative, are hoping to finalize a new partnership.
During their regular meeting on June 23, councillors heard from Truemner about the progress the Collingwood Housing Initiative has made since being awarded $25,000 in seed funding in January from the town to start a new housing non-profit.
Since January, Truemner told councillors she and McCorriston have spent time meeting with housing providers and builders in the area and with the town’s affordable housing task force, to learn as much as they can about how the current housing system works. Through making those connections, she said they discovered the Collingwood Non-Profit Housing Corporation, who built a non-profit 45-unit apartment building in Collingwood nearly 30 years ago, and still runs as a non-profit today.

Collingwood Non-Profit Housing Corporation will pay off mortgage in 2026
In June, Jane Truemner of the Collingwood Housing Initiative (CHI) came before council to provide an update on the town’s new housing non-profit, made possible by $25,000 in seed funding from the town’s coffers awarded in January.
As part of that, she informed council that CHI would be looking to partner with the Collingwood Non-Profit Housing Corporation — a quiet, little organization that started 35 years ago, owns one apartment building in Collingwood, and is looking forward to having its mortgage finally paid off in February.
So, how exactly did the Collingwood Non-Profit Housing Corporation start, and what lessons has it learned over the past 35 years about operating a non-profit housing corporation in Collingwood?
In an interview with CollingwoodToday, board chair Sharon Goldsworthy said the idea started in the late 1980s with a full-page advertisement in the newspaper.
